Chapter 1: The Final Sentence

I was carried to a small stone column by a surly looking Machoke. He set me down on the top of
the elaborate thing and chained my small arms to it. I glared at him as he walked away, then
directed my gaze to a Houndour that was sitting calmly against the wall of the room. He had to
be the one who was restraining all of my special attacks. He returned my glare with a calmness
that mocked me. I would have hurt him, but he was the exact reason that I couldn't hurt anyone.
Him and the fact that I wasn't even powerful enough physically to break the chains that held me
down.

Since the pathetic Houndour was beginning to get on my nerves, I looked to the front of the
room. In the direction I was supposed to be facing there were seventeen different chairs and
cushions raised up on a platform, on both sides of a carved wooden podium. Seventeen. That
meant that the entire Council was going to be here. I was really in trouble now, and I hadn't even
done anything.

I had to stand there for what seemed like an eternity, waiting for all of the Council to arrive.
There was one representative for every different type of pokemon, not including the head of the
Council. They were all the most powerful, supposedly. Of course I could have defeated them all
easily if I were able to use one of my special attacks, but that wasn't the case right now.
Eventually they all gathered, the Head of the Council entering last.

I watched Kat walk up and stand behind the large podium, wearing a deep blue shawl over her
shoulders and carrying a large wooden staff. She was a Mewtwo, and one I knew very well. Her
short fur was a delicate pink that blended with the darker maroon colour of her tail. As she
looked at me, her soft azure eyes were filled with sadness. This was even more serious then I
thought. They couldn't have found me guilty!

The Hypno who was sitting directly to the left of the podium cleared his throat and glanced at
Kat. She gave a small sigh then straitened and stood at her full height. "Joey the mew," she
hesitated. Everyone there knew that I was a hybrid, but no one wanted to say it out loud. "You
have been brought before the entire Council of United Pokemon because you have committed a
serious crime." Her voice was shaking. I took a deep breath because I knew what was coming.
"You have been found guilty of the murder of the pokemon trainer Gary Oak."

"But I didn't do it!" I yelled fiercely. I had to bite my lip to stop myself from crying again. It had
only been four days since that night, but the memories were still fresh in my mind. I would have
never have killed Gary, never. I would have given up my own life to save his, but on the night
that he died there was nothing I could have done to save him. Nothing at all.

A Wigglytuff stood up from her chair. She had to be the representative of the normal type
pokemon. "All evidence points to you, Joey. You were found at the scene of the crime. Not only
that, but the psychic attack that killed him was identical to one your attacks. You know that each
psychic pokemon has their own unique frequency for psychic attacks. It's as obvious as a finger
print."

I glared at the normal-type pokemon. "You have got the evidence wrong then, because I didn't do
it! What motivation would I have had for killing him?" It was so hard to hold back the tears. I
was innocent, no matter what some stupid evidence said.

"He probably tired to capture you or something," the Hypno declared, waving his hand.
"Knowing you, you probably killed him for your own amusement."

The Hypno's words burned in my ears. I felt my eyes start to fill with water, despite my efforts to
stop them. "You don't know anything about me," I hissed.

"Enough of your begging," snapped an Umbreon sitting to the right of Kat. "The decision of the
Council is final." The representative of Dark type pokemon smiled darkly, then nudged the
podium Kat was standing behind.

Kat gave another deep sigh and gripped the staff she held so strongly that I though that it might
snap in two. "Joey," Her voice was quite obviously shaking at this point. "By unanimous
decision made by all seventeen members of the Council of United Pokemon, you are hereby
sentenced to execution, set to take place at sundown tomorrow."

The words seemed to flow through me, numbing everything. This was it then, was it? This was
the end? Slowly I slumped down into a sit, staring off into nothing. Tears began to fall from my
eyes, but I barely even noticed.
